I am Emma. I am 25 years old and have recently started my new job at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council as a ‘Museums Collections Management Trainee’. This job is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as part of the Skills for the Future initiative.
I am one of four HLF trainees at SMBC: the other three being Conservation Management, Countryside Management, and Libraries and Archives Management. As part of the trainee role we have to keep a record of our placements. I have decided to document my year of ‘on-the-job training’ in a blog format, and will share with you what I am doing and what I am learning here in Stockport – as well as passing on any helpful courses or resources I come across!
There are eight heritage sites managed by Stockport Council:
- Air Raid Shelters
- Art Gallery
- Bramhall Hall
- Chadkirk Chapel
- Hat Works
- Staircase House
- Stockport Story
- Vernon Park Museum
I will be based at the heritage stores, but working with and for these eight sites. I may also engage with these other sites connected to the Stockport curatorial services:
- Abney Hall
- Local Heritage Library (at Central Library, Stockport)
- Lyme Hall (National Trust property, supported by funding from Stockport Council)
- Mellor Archaeological Trust
- The Plaza
- Stockport Heritage Trust
The team at the heritage stores is: Katie Cavanagh – Team Leader, Collections and Exhibitions; Angela Nesic – Curatorial Officer; Janny Baxter – Curatorial Officer; Nicola Constantine – Curatorial Officer; Terry Mullaney – Design & Interpretation Officer; and Andy Pedroza – Technician. I will be working alongside them and getting lots of help and advice from them along the way!
This is just a quick post to get me started – I have a box of goodies waiting to be accessioned – so watch this space as I will be back to tell you about my first two weeks on the job… armed with embarrassing photographic evidence of me doing various collections management tasks!
